Andrew Mason Transmission Ceremony, Nov 23rd, 2025

On November 23rd 50 folks gathered for Andrew Mason’s transmission ceremony, amidst misty rain at the still-under-construction Mason Farm site to mark Andrew’s formal authorization as a fully-independent teacher.

The ceremony was led by Nelson Foster, Andrew’s teacher of 35 years, who traveled to Portland from his home in Sierra Nevada foothills for the occasion. In addition to Ring of Moss sangha members, the ceremony was attended by ~ 60 guests from other Portland sanghas, a clutch of Ring of Bone sangha members, Andrew’s family and a handful of non-practicing friends.

Andrew offered teishō and mondo before receiving cautions from Nelson, and gifts of a kotzu and brocade rakusu as part of the transmission. After the chanting the Hannya Shingyo the group adjourned for a delightful spread of sangha-created delectables shared in the spirit of celebration.
