Request for ROM Zendo Design Committee Members

Ring of Moss is seeking a committee of 2 - 4 sangha members to serve on a Zendo Design Committee over the next six months, July 2025 – December 2025. 

Goal — To develop a design vision for the new zendo in the barn at the Mason Farm property. 

What ‘s involved?

Time commitment: 

Participation as a member of the Zendo Design Committee member is likely to require 10 hours per month, 3-hour meetings every two weeks over the next six months (July-December 2025), and some individual tasks and reading in the interim. Specific time investment will vary depending on the stage of the project. A member of the design committee may choose to participate for one or more phases of the project.

What experience do you need?

Committee members do not need prior experience in construction, project management, or design. Your role on the committee is to represent good Zen practice and the values and needs of the sangha to make sure that these are translated into the design process. 

What is the work involved?  Key aspects of the work of the Design Committee will include the following:     

1. Establishing criteria for selecting a Design Team, consisting of architectural and construction contractors as well as related volunteers and subcontractors. This may involve some reading, researching and individual tasks, as needed.  

2. Selecting a Design Team in accordance with the criteria established.

3. Developing a schematic design for the zendo, a budget, and a timeline with the selected design team.

After developing criteria for Design Team selection, we will establish a process to identify, recruit and select Design Team members. This will likely include networking and interviews.

After selecting a Design Team, the designers will lead us through a design process, integrating the broader sangha for key decisions, until we arrive at a schematic design.
